An expert report from the Environmental Prosecutor’s Office brings hope to more than 4,000 residents of Coria del Río after two decades of legal struggle

An expert report, prepared by the Environmental Technical Unit of the State Prosecutor’s Office, confirms what more than 4,000 residents of the Guadalquivir Neighborhood in Coria del Río have been reporting for over two decades: the existence of a “danger of substantial damage to the quality of surface waters and confirmed damage to groundwater, soils, and public health” as a consequence of contamination from hydrocarbon spills from a nearby gas station.

This opinion represents a significant advance in the struggle of those affected, who finally see their complaints validated after more than 20 years of litigation. The judicial resolution obtained not only marks a turning point in the defense of the rights of the residents of the Guadalquivir Neighborhood, but also reinforces the need for companies and public administrations to assume their environmental and social responsibilities.
